YADADRI BHUVANAGIRI- Diagnostic Field Visit to Cotton Fields
The Principal Scientist & Coordinator Telangana Rythu Vignana Kendra (TRVK), Yadadri Bhuvanagiri,Dr. D. Srilatha, along with A. Ramulu, Scientist (Plant Protection KVK,Kampasagar, and G. Swathi, Scientist (Horticulture), KVK Kampasagar, visited cotton fields in Jammapuram and Cheemalakondur villages under the Rayagiri and Cheemalakondur clusters of Bhuvanagiri Mandal.
During the field visit, the scientists interacted with farmers and assessed the condition of the cotton crop.
As per the State department of Agriculture reports even though 70 of the cotton area in the district has been sown so far due to prolonged dry spell and the impact of El Niño. Many farmers had taken up cotton sowing three times between the last week of may to second week of July.
The scientists advised farmers those are having borewell or open well irrigation facilities to adopt drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems to efficiently utilize the available water and minimize the adverse effects of moisture stress.
The team also visited the field of Sri Ch.Balaswamy at Jammapuram, where the farmer was successfully protecting his cotton crop using a rain gun irrigation system. Farmers were encouraged to adopt such alternative irrigation methods wherever feasible to sustain the crop during drought conditions.
The scientists further recommended intercultivation at 30–35 days after sowing to conserve soil moisture and improve aeration. They also advised spraying a 2% urea solution (20 g urea per litre of water) at around 40 days after sowing to help the crop withstand moisture stress and improve plant vigour under drought conditions.
The team also inspected a moringa plantation, where farmers were advised to utilize drip irrigation for efficient water management. The scientists highlighted the excellent market demand and income potential of moringa cultivation, encouraging farmers to adopt scientific cultivation practices.
Sri Ch. Beerayya, Sarpanch, Jammapuram; Sri Pallerla Anjaiah, Sarpanch, Cheemalakondur; progressive farmers Sri Goura Madhu, Sri Narasaiah, Sri Ch. Balaswamy, and Sri Ch. Chinnaiah; AEO Ms. Sandhya (Rayagiri); AEO Sri Umamaheshwar (Cheemalakondur); and several other farmers from the cluster villages also visited the fields.
