Siddipet organized Field Day cum Awareness programme on Greengram preceding to Rice fallows
Field day cum Awareness programme on “Green gram preceding to rice fallows” was organised by TRVK, Siddipet at Chinnakodur (V&M), Siddipet District on 30.06.2025. Dr. Ch. Pallavi, Coordinator & Scientist (CP) highlighted the importance of green gram cultivation, its role in improving the fertility of soil by the addition of organic carbon and emphasized farming community about the scope of pulses area expansion with suitable varieties which can be adopted in different cropping systems. She also emphasized on the importance of greengram in N fixation and improving soil fertility due to its leguminous nature and green manuring before kharif rice. She advised farmers to cultivate green manure crops such as dhaincha (Sesbania), sunnhemp, horse gram, cowpea, black gram, and green gram, and incorporate them into the soil either before flowering or at around 50% flowering stage. This practice improves soil physical, chemical, and biological properties, enhances long-term soil fertility and crop productivity, and reduces the cost of cultivation. If dhaincha or sunnhemp seeds are not available on time, farmers should not delay sowing while waiting for those seeds. Instead, they can cultivate green gram, which serves the dual purpose of providing an additional yield of 3–4 quintals per acre while also functioning effectively as a green manure crop when incorporated into the soil. She also clarified the farmers’ doubts regarding the management of rice caseworm (Mogi purugu) in paddy nurseries and suggested appropriate control measures. In this programme, ARS, Tornala scientists Dr. Swetha and Dr. G. Neelima, MAO-Jayanth Kumar, AEO-Srikanth, FPO Chairman Sri. Venkat Reddy, FPO Directors and members and 10 farmers have participated.
