Tornala Conducted Training cum Awareness programme on New Jowar variety PYPS-2

TRVK, Siddipet & ARS, Tornala Conducted Training cum Awareness programme on New Jowar variety PYPS-2 on 25.09.2026 at Sriram thanda village, Akkannapet Mandal, Siddipet district. As part of the programme, seeds of the sorghum variety PYPS-2 (Palem Paccha Jonna-1) were distributed to 50 farmers to encourage the cultivation of millets and promote suitable alternative crops among farmers. Dr. G. Santhosh Kumar, Scientist and Head, ARS, Tornala, explained the importance of millet cultivation under rainfed conditions. He highlighted that millet cultivation requires less water, lower investment, fewer resources and comparatively lower use of chemical inputs. Millets can be successfully cultivated under various challenging conditions, including rainfed lands, shallow soils and soils with low fertility, without significant reduction in productivity. He advised farmers to take up millet cultivation as an alternative and profitable crop. He also emphasized that, under the prevailing El Niño conditions, sorghum can provide better income with comparatively lower water requirements than several other crops. Dr. Ch. Pallavi, Coordinator & Scientist (CP), TRVK, Siddipet explained the characteristics of Sorghum variety PYPS-2. She informed that this variety is suitable for cultivation in both Kharif and Rabi (Yasangi) seasons. The crop duration of PYPS-2 jowar is about 95-105 days. This variety is tolerant to grain mold, shoot fly, and stem borer. PYPS-2 dual purpose sorghum variety both for fodder (50-55 q/acre) and grain purpose (12-15 q/acre) is performing good under farmers field rather than local varieties. Later, Dr. D. Swetha explained the importance and benefits of millets and their role in improving nutritional and livelihood security, Dr. A. Saritha created awareness among the farmers regarding seed production practices in different crops, emphasizing the importance of quality seed production and its role in improving crop productivity. In this programme, Mandal Agriculture officer Smt. Tasleema Sultana, Agriculture Extension Officer- Smt. Srilatha, Sri Prabhakar, Akkannapet Mandal Congress President, Sriram Thanda village Sarpanch Banoth Venkatesh, Upa Sarpanch Raju, Panchayat Secretary Sampath, and 50 farmers were participated.
