Mahabubnagar conducted a Training Programme on Contingency Crop Planning at Rudraram village
On 11-08-2026, Telangana Rythu Vigyan Kendra (TRVK), Mahabubnagar conducted a Training Programme on Contingency Crop Planning at Rudraram village, Nawabpet Mandal, with the objective of creating awareness among farmers and RAWEP students on suitable crop planning and management strategies under delayed and deficient rainfall conditions.
Dr. K. Kalyani, Coordinator, TRVK, Mahabubnagar, conducted the training programme and explained the importance of contingency planning in minimizing crop losses under uncertain rainfall situations. She emphasized the need to reduce the area under paddy cultivation and promote pulses, oilseeds and millets based on the availability of water and prevailing weather conditions. She also explained suitable crop management practices to be followed during moisture stress conditions, including selection of suitable alternative crops, efficient utilization of available soil moisture and timely adoption of recommended agronomic practices. The suitable sowing windows for contingency crops were also discussed. She advised farmers to take up redgram, horsegram, castor and sunflower up to 15th August, depending on soil moisture and local rainfall conditions. Sesame can be taken up up to 31st August where adequate soil moisture is available.
Sri Krishna Kishore, MAO, Nawabpet, highlighted the importance of contingency crop planning and explained the need for farmers to adopt suitable alternative crops whenever rainfall is delayed or inadequate. He stressed that timely crop planning and appropriate crop selection can help farmers minimize the impact of adverse weather conditions and sustain farm income.
Sri K. Ravi, Sarpanch, Rudraram village, motivated the farmers to adopt suitable alternative crops instead of depending solely on paddy, particularly under water-deficit conditions. He encouraged the farmers to utilize the available resources efficiently and follow the technical recommendations provided by the Agriculture Department and TRVK.
Smt. Shwetha, AEO, Rudraram, and Smt. Gowtami, AEO, Kakarlapahad, A total of 25 farmers from Rudraram and Karakonda villages participated in the programme. In addition, 31 RAWEP students from Rudraram, Kakarla Pahad, Marchanpally, Vemula and Kulluru villages attended the training programme.
