1928: Started research on rice crop with a mandate to develop suitable varieties for the Hyderabad State.
1950: Separate Rice Section was created and Headed by Rice Specialist.
1965: The All India Coordinated Rice improvement programme was implemented strengthening research work in disciplines like Breeding, Agronomy, Plant Pathology and Entomology catering to rice research needs of Southern Telangana Zone (covering erstwhile Ranga Reddy, Mahabubnagar & Nalgonda Districts).
2014: Rice Section has been renamed as Rice Research Centre commensurate with establishment of Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University owing to it “acting as nodal networking centre for Rice Research”, headed by Principal Scientist (Rice) after formation of Telangana State.
2022: Upgraded as Institute of Rice Research and new building was inaugurated on 19th July 2022. Headed by PS (Rice) this centre acts as nodal centre for all rice research centres of Telangana State by coordinating and networking of trials of crop improvement, crop production and protection (MLTs, Quality and genotyping data, nutrient trials, multiple insect pest and disease screening, monitoring research programmes & minikits, scrutinizing and recommending varieties for CVRC and SVRC etc.,)
2025: Renamed as Rice Research Unit, ARI, Rajendranagar

- Institute of Rice Research, ARI, Rajendranagar received Best Research Station award during 10th University Foundation day i.e., 3rd September, 2024.
- Rice Entomology, Rice Research Centre, ARI, Rajendranagar awarded Best AICRIP Centre in Entomology discipline during 60th ARGM (2025) held at IIRR, Rajendranagar
Agro-Technologies Developed:
- Novel and broad spectrum combination fungicide for managing multiple diseases of rice.
- Thifluzamide 24% SC: A cost effective fungicide for control of sheath blight of rice.
- Regularly involved in human resource development through different extension activities to enable sustainable rice production and profitability.
- Regularly conduct Production Oriented Survey (POS) and collect feed back from rice farmers across the state to further enable us to formulate effective technical programmes for sustainable rice farming.
- Conduct diagnostic visits during active crop growing season and provide suitable solutions for better crop productivity.
Regularly developing and disseminating information on pest alerts through youtube videos for profitable rice farming
