Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

The Biotechnology Research Unit was established at Agricultural Research Institute, Rajendranagar during November 1998 to carryout research in biotechnology. Later in the year 2001, Post graduation programme in Agri-Biotechnology was initiated. The Institute of Biotechnology was inaugurated on 23rd August 2009 by combining both teaching and Research components of Biotechnology and commenced from 21.06.2011. The mandate of the institute is development of human resource and capacity building in the area of agricultural biotechnology and improvement of agricultural crops through molecular breeding and transgenic approaches. The institute focuses on marker assisted breeding in rice which is major crop in the state by assisting plant breeders located in various research stations in varied agro ecologies. In addition, studies on genetic diversity, DNA fingerprinting, genetic purity assessment in rice chickpea green gram, black gram, soybean and maize are carried out. 30 projects worth more than 7 cores were executed in cereals, oil seeds, millets and pulses with the support of donors viz., USAID, DBT, DST, SERB, NASF and RKVY from this institute. 250 publications were published in reputed national and international journals.

    Student Experiences

My self Ambati Govardhani, an alumna of College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University (PJTSAU). I had the privilege of pursuing my M.Sc. degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from 2018 to 2020. During my postgraduate studies, I completed two semesters of comprehensive coursework, followed by two semesters of research work. The curriculum provided me with a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of modern molecular biology. In addition to basic principles, the coursework also covered advanced topics such as gene editing, transformation, RNA interference (RNAi), marker-assisted selection, forward and reverse genetic approaches. These subjects gave me deep insights into cutting-edge biotechnological innovations.
