Desi cotton (Gossypium arboreum), known for its resistance to sucking pests, tolerance to bollworms, synchronous maturity, and good fibre strength, offers a low-cost, high benefit cultivation option for farmers. These easy-care cottons are well-suited for sustainable farming with high cost-benefit ratios. Several desi cotton varieties have been released, including Gaorani-6 (1944) with 25 mm staple length and 300–400 kg/ha yield; Saraswathi (1978), an improved selection with 27.5 mm staple, 600–800 kg/ha yield, and 36% ginning outturn; and Veena, yielding 1000–1200 kg/ha with 25 mm staple and high 40% ginning percentage. Promising pre-released cultures include MDL-ABB-1, a big-bolled type suitable for surgical cotton with 1000–1200 kg/ha yield, 20 mm staple, and 45% ginning; MDL-2667, which performed well in national trials with 1500–1800 kg/ha yield, 25 mm staple, and 38% ginning; MDL-2674, with 1200–1400 kg/ha yield, 23 mm staple, and 38–40% ginning, ranked first in South Zone trials (2021–22); and MDL-2663, yielding 1500–1600 kg/ha with 25 mm staple and 38% ginning, which ranked fourth in national trials. These developments highlight the potential of desi cotton for high productivity and diverse applications including medical-grade fibre.
